Abstract
Femicide is a form of gender-based violence that refers to the killing of women because of their gender identity. Femicide in Turkey is related to patriarchy as a system within society. Turkey has adopted international conventions on the protection of women’s rights, namely CEDAW and the Istanbul Convention. However, the ratification of these conventions has not been able to eliminate cases of femicide in Turkey, as shown by the increasing number of victims each year. This study aims to determine the reasons why Turkey has not been able to eliminate cases of femicide in the country despite the existence of laws regulating the protection of women. The author uses the concepts of Galtung’s violence triangle, femicide in feminism , and patriarchal culture. This study uses a qualitative method with a causality approach to trace the cause-andeffect relationships of the phenomenon. The author finds that direct violence in Turkey is reflected through acts of violence, namely the existence of victims and perpetrators. Perpetrators in femicide are not only individuals but also the state. Structural violence is shown in the representation of positive law in the form of legislation as well as the behavior of law enforcement in Turkey that sides with the perpetrators of violence. In terms of cultural violence, femicide occurs because patriarchy is embedded in the system of culture, language, and ideology.
