Abstrak

People with Down syndrome as one of the people with disabilities are often considered unable to play a role in the world of work. In fact, they have potential skills that can be developed with the right support, one of which is through interpersonal communication. This study examines interpersonal communication between instructors and people with Down syndrome at Piduh Charity Cafe Bali in developing skills as workers. The research uses a descriptive qualitative approach with data collection techniques including in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation. The results show that communication between instructors and people with Down syndrome requires adjustments due to their limitations. This is analyzed through Devito's six elements of interpersonal communication, showing the instructor's dominant role, constructive verbal and nonverbal messages, visual instruction aids, internal and external communication disorders, work environment context, and communication ethics. The effectiveness of interpersonal communication is seen through face-to-face interaction and five qualities by Devito: openness, empathy, supportiveness, positiveness, and equality. These qualities support both parties in achieving the goal, namely the optimal development of work skills.
