This study analyzes the short story collection Sagra by Oka Rusmini using Roland Barthes' semiotic approach. The main objective is to deconstruct the hidden meanings, particularly those related to the critique of Balinese tradition and the role of women within it. A qualitative research method isapplied, focusing on textual analysis of the short stories, including "Api Sita", "Putu Menolong Tuhan", "Pemahat Abad", and "Ketika Perkawinan Harus Dimulai." The semiotic analysis is conducted at three levels: denotation, connotation, and myth. At the denotation level, the book presents a literal description of Balinese cultural practices and objects. At the connotation level, these elements are enriched with a second layer of ideological meaning, such as the social stigma attached to unmarried women or those without children, as well as oppressive beauty standards. The analysis culminates in revealing how Oka Rusmini cleverly dismantles the myths deeply rooted in patriarchal society, such as the myth that a woman's role is solely as a wife and mother, and that self-sacrifice is a noble act. The findings indicate that Oka Rusmini effectively uses her literary work as a medium of communication to critique oppressive social structures. By deconstructing these myths, Sagra functions not merely as a work of fiction but as a cultural text that challenges traditional views and gives a voice to women. This study contributes to the field of semiotics in Communication Studies, demonstrating that literature is a crucial arena for negotiating meaning and driving social change.
