Abstract

Culture shock is a common experience among international students as they adapt to a cultural environment and academic system that differ from their home country. Differences in norms, language, traditions, and educational systems often create various obstacles and stress for students during the adjustment process. This study aims to identify the intercultural communication strategies used by international students in dealing with culture shock, as well as to understand the factors influencing their successful adaptation in the new environment. The study employs a qualitative approach using in-depth interviews with 22 international students from various regions in Indonesia who are currently pursuing their studies at Universitas 'Aisyiyah Yogyakarta. Data were analyzed interpretatively to understand students' experiences and communication strategies in the cultural adaptation process. The results indicate that students employ various adaptive communication strategies, such as building supportive interpersonal communication, learning the local language contextually, and utilizing social media as a means to understand the new culture. Key factors supporting successful adaptation include self-openness, social support from peers and the campus environment, and a positive attitude toward the local culture. The main challenges encountered include language barriers, social norms, and feelings of embarrassment; however, with appropriate strategies, students are able to undergo a harmonious acculturation process and demonstrate success in adapting to their new environment.
