POTRET BANJIR DALAM SASTRA SEJARAH BALI
Abstract
This research aims to identify and analyze the depiction of floods within Balinese historical literature. Balinese historical texts comprising genres such as babad and tutur occupy a unique position by synthesizing historical facts with mythological elements, the legitimacy of power, and ancestral cults. Amidst the massive flood disasters striking Bali and various regions across Indonesia throughout 2025, excavating the meanings within these classical texts becomes crucial as a critical reflection on the relationship between humanity and nature. This study employs a qualitative approach, utilizing purposive sampling to examine three primary texts: Babad Ksatria Taman Bali, Tutur Kundalini, and Dwijendra Tatwa. The analysis is conducted by applying Gadamer’s Philosophical Hermeneutics, which emphasizes the concept of the fusion of horizons between the world of the text and the contemporary reader's context. The results indicate that the phenomenon of floods in Balinese historical literature can be mapped into three typologies: 1) floods as a symbol of apocalypse, signaling destruction leading toward a new purification; 2) floods as a reminder of human error, functioning as a logical-moral consequence of ethical transgressions; and 3) floods as an obstacle, representing an intervention that, contextually, may prove advantageous for certain characters. This research concludes that flood narratives in Balinese historical literature present local insights into understanding disasters as a dialogue between humans and nature, offering a profound reflection for contemporary culture-based disaster mitigation.
