Abstract

Geguritan Jaya Prana is a classical Balinese literary work in the form of tembang or pupuh. Geguritan Jayaprana is composed of only one pupuh, namely pupuh Ginada. Geguritan Jayaprana tells the sad story of Jaya Prana, an orphan who served in the palace. After Jaya Prana reached adulthood, he was ordered by the king to find a wife. Jaya Prana found a girl named Layon Sari, who later became his wife. Seeing Layon Sari’s beauty, His Majesty the King fell in love with her and wished to marry her. To carry out his intention, Jaya Prana was sent to Teluk Terima to guard the kingdom’s territory from an enemy siege, accompanied by Patih Saung Galing. However, in reality there was no enemy; this was the king’s trick to eliminate Jaya Prana. This study uses structural theory, as stated by A. Teeuw, that a text consists of elements that form a larger structure. The method used is the observational method, namely reading the text repeatedly in order to understand its content well. In addition, transliteration and translation methods are also used in this research. The conclusions of this study are: (1) The plot of Geguritan Jayaprana is a linear plot, the story begins from the beginning and flows to the end with the deaths of Jayaprana and Layonsari (together in life and death). (2) The characters in Geguritan Jayaprana include the main characters King Kalianget, Jayaprana, and Layonsari. (3) Each character is portrayed with distinct traits, such as King Kalianget who is evil, killing I Jayaprana and taking Ni Layonsari as his wife (queen consort). Jayaprana is characterized as good, devoted, and obedient to the king’s command. Ni Layonsari commits suicide (masatia) after hearing of Jayaprana’s death.
