Abstract

This study aims to examine the representation of the author’s ideology in Babad Diponegoro using a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) approach. The analysis draws on the appraisal system developed by Martin and White (2005) as part of SFL to reveal the role of social factors—such as social class, ethnicity, gender, and generation—in the construction of ideology. The analysis focuses on six dominant characters, with Prince Diponegoro as the central figure of the narrative. The findings indicate that Prince Diponegoro is represented as a ratu adil figure, a religious leader, and a morally upright subject possessing both spiritual and social legitimacy. This representation is constructed through lexicogrammatical realizations that show a tendency toward positive polarity toward the main character and his group, and negative polarity toward the colonial side. The appraisal system constructs Diponegoro’s image as knowledgeable, responsible, and oriented toward Islamic values and Javanese tradition. The analysis also reveals hierarchical social relations, in which the main character occupies the highest social stratum and holds authority in the use of imperative clauses, while common people are positioned as subordinate. The dominance of declarative clauses indicates the textual function of presenting the author’s version of reality as authoritative. Meanwhile, the distribution of interrogative clauses, limited to characters of higher social status, signals the presence of power ideology in the discourse structure. The use of a first-person autobiographical point of view strengthens narrative legitimacy and underscores the author’s control over the representation of events. Thus, Babad Diponegoro functions not only as a historical text but also as a discursive practice that represents religious, feudal, and anti-colonial ideologies through linguistic strategies, characterization, and the organization of social relations within the text.
