Abstract

Language is an arbitrary system governed by normative rules encompassing phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, which are expected to be adhered to by its speakers. However, when language is used in social practice, linguistic phenomena often emerge that deliberately violate these rules for specific purposes. Therefore, this study does not view such violations of linguistic norms as indicators of speakers’ incompetence or linguistic errors, but rather as linguistic strategies that carry social meaning. In this context, the mother tongue may serve as one of the contributing factors to linguistic norm violations. For instance, in Instagram content, expressions such as “Aku mengalami kemaluan” instead of “Aku malu” (“I am embarrassed”), and “Sudah wayahe pulang” instead of “Waktunya pulang” (“It is time to go home”) are found. These occurrences arise because content creators intentionally incorporate Javanese linguistic rules into Indonesian in order to present the content humorously. This study aims to identify and classify forms of linguistic norm violations in Indonesian used in Instagram content as a means of mother tongue maintenance, as well as to reveal the social factors influencing them. The research employs a sociolinguistic approach with a qualitative descriptive method. The data consist of words, phrases, and sentences containing violations of Indonesian linguistic norms as a form of mother tongue maintenance, specifically Javanese. The data were obtained from an Instagram account and collected using observation and note-taking techniques. The findings indicate the presence of words, phrases, and sentences that violate Indonesian linguistic norms as a strategy of mother tongue maintenance, including phonological, morphological, semantic, and lexical violations, the use of intensity markers not found in Indonesian, and expressive onomatopoeia. These phenomena are influenced by the social background of the content creator as a Javanese speaker. This study concludes that language maintenance can be carried out through social media, with Instagram serving as a symbolic space for language maintenance.
