Abstract

Mother tongue plays a crucial role as the first language acquired by children and serves as a pillar of cultural identity. However, in the context of modernization and digital technological development, the sustainability of mother tongues faces significant challenges, particularly among the Alpha generation. This study aims to examine the shift of mother tongue use among the Alpha generation in Bali by focusing on the weakening function of the Balinese language within the family domain, as well as identifying challenges and opportunities for its preservation in the era of digital modernization. This research employs a descriptive qualitative method with a sociolinguistic approach. The participants consist of four Alpha generation children aged 5–10 years who grow up in Balinese–Indonesian bilingual families. Data were collected through direct observation of language interactions within the family environment and documented in field notes. The findings reveal that children still possess receptive competence in the Balinese language, as indicated by their understanding of utterances produced by family members. However, this competence is not accompanied by productive use of the language. Children tend to respond to Balinese utterances using Indonesian or through nonverbal actions. This pattern indicates a functional shift of the Balinese language from an active means of communication to a passively understood language. The dominance of Indonesian in family interactions and the influence of digital media dominated by the national language further accelerate the shift of the mother tongue. Nevertheless, the persistence of receptive competence suggests that the mother tongue has not been entirely disconnected from the Alpha generation and still holds potential for revitalization. This study emphasizes the critical role of families in maintaining the mother tongue and highlights the strategic use of digital media as a supporting tool for preserving language and cultural identity.
