IMPLEMENTING THE CALQUE TRANSLATION TECHNIQUE IN START WITH WHY: A DESCRIPTIVE LINGUISTICS
Abstract
Calque seems like a translation technique that is simple for anyone because it is only about a single word. Unfortunately, it relies on various linguistic disciplines. It could be in phonology, morphology, both phonology and morphology, and also syntax. This research focused on word formation rules of equivalent lexicons which are translated by considering the calque translation technique found in the motivational book Start With Why by Sinek (2009) and its translation by Purwoko (2019). This was a qualitative study. In collecting data, a documentation study was applied. This study focused on; (1) the forms of English source language text translated into Indonesian by applying the Calque technique; (2) the process of Word Formation Rules in the target language; and (3) the new standard model of applying the calque translation technique. The result is that phonological and morphological principles rely on calque word formations, especially in the internal structure.
