PENERAPAN MEDIA VOCABULARY FLASHCARDS TERHADAP PENGUASAAN ADJEKTIVA BAHASA INGGRIS
Abstract
Mastery of English adjectives constitutes an essential component of vocabulary learning, as it involves understanding meaning, semantic relations, and appropriate word usage in sentences. However, students’ mastery of adjectives remains limited, particularly in recognizing word meanings and applying adjectives accurately in simple contexts. This study aims to analyze students’ level of adjective mastery before and after the implementation of vocabulary flashcards. The study employed a one-group pretest-posttest design within a qualitative approach and involved 15 junior and senior high school students enrolled in an English course institution. Data were collected through tests and classroom observations. The test instrument covered five aspects: word meaning (English-Indonesian), synonyms, antonyms, word meaning (English–English), and the use of adjectives in simple present tense sentences. Quantitative data served as supporting data and were analyzed through mean score calculation and ability classification, while qualitative data were analyzed descriptively with reference to word formation theory and vocabulary mastery concepts. The findings indicate that prior to the treatment, the students’ mean score was 26.80, which fell into the very low category. The main difficulties were found in morphological understanding and semantic relations. After the implementation of vocabulary flashcards over four meetings, the mean score increased to 71.86, and all students reached fair and good categories. This improvement was not merely quantitative but also reflected enhanced conceptual understanding and more accurate use of adjectives in sentence contexts. Therefore, vocabulary flashcards are proven to be effective in strengthening vocabulary mastery in an integrative manner within EFL learning contexts.
