ANALISIS TRANSFER MAKNA PADA TERJEMAHAN PUISI TAUFIK ISMAIL KE DALAM BAHASA INGGRIS

Abstract

This paper discusses the translation of three poems by Taufik Ismail into English by John H. McGlynn (1990). The figurative meaning has a very close relationship with translating poetry and literature. This paper focuses on two issues: meaning consistency and translation strategy. According to Newmark (1991), translation is a form of art that aims to convey written messages from the source language (SL) to written messages in the target language (TL). During this process, a translator must consider the context, the rules of syntax, the writing conventions, and the style of the two languages. The translation of literary works differs from the translation of texts in general. In the translation of literary works, especially poetry, a translator must be able to understand the meaning that the author wants to convey in the SL so as to produce a meaning match in the TL. This research investigates the phenomenon of meaning matching in the interpretation of literature, especially poems, using qualitative-descriptive methods. The analysis of three poems from the work of Taufik Ismail, translated into English, shows that the translator has successfully implemented the translation procedures necessary to give the meaning consistency of SL to TL. The analysis shows that the translators succeeded in giving meaning matches to the SL in the TL, and the translator applied several translation procedures, namely: transposition, naturalization, cultural equivalent, synonyms, and compensation.
