STRATEGI LINGUISTIK NEGOSIASI ADAT: PERAN KOHESI DALAM MENGELOLA HIERARKI SOSIAL PADA UPACARA SORONG SERAH AJI KRAMA
Abstract
The Sorong Serah Aji Krama ceremony represents the pinnacle of cultural diplomacy in Sasak marriage customs, mediated through a high-variety linguistic register by a Pembayun. As a high-stakes speech event, the success of this negotiation relies heavily on the speaker’s linguistic precision in adhering to a rigid, standardized customary script. This study aims to explore the linguistic strategies of customary negotiation by analyzing the dominance of cohesive devices and their social indexical functions. Adopting a qualitative design with a syntax-discourse interface approach, data from ritual speech transcriptions in Central Lombok were analyzed through a synergy of Halliday & Hasan’s Cohesion Theory and Silverstein’s Indexicality Theory. Based on the identification of 1,696 cohesive devices, the findings reveal that Lexical Cohesion (Repetition) is the most dominant (81.3%), followed by Grammatical Reference (13%) and Conjunctions (5.7%). Indexical analysis suggests that massive repetition functions to construct an Aesthetic Order, while honorific references serve as indexical markers that navigate social hierarchy and assert the value of humility (Andap Asor). This rigid cohesive structure proves that redundancy and honorific markers are not merely linguistic ornaments but are fundamental mechanisms of cultural indexicality in preserving Sasak identity.
