Keywords:
Balinese Script, Ethics and Criticism, EthnosemanticsAbstract
The Balinese script is unique not only in its form but also emphasizes spelling and writing procedures. The "syllabic" characteristic requires the Balinese script form to be paired with vowel markers (pangangge suara) and several closed syllable markers such as tengenan, gantung, and arda suara. These pairings are all full of rules, not only from a spelling perspective but also implicitly imply ethical and critical contexts that are important to reveal as a means of education. Thus, the issues studied include: 1) ethics and criticism in the use of pangangge suara, 2) ethics and criticism in the use of tengenan, and 3) ethics and criticism in the use of gantung and arda suara. In general, the aim of this study is to preserve the existence of the Balinese script by strengthening its function and meaning in the lives of Balinese people. The specific aim is to describe the ethical and critical contexts contained in the Balinese script spelling writing system. The primary data of this research is the "Pedoman Pasang Aksara Bali" published by the Bali Provincial Cultural Office, while the results of interviews and literature studies are secondary data. Data were collected using a literature study method assisted by note-taking techniques, and the interview method assisted by a questionnaire technique. Then, the data were analyzed using the Distributional and the Determining Elements Selection method. The results of the analysis are presented using deductive and inductive methods assisted by formal and informal writing techniques. The results of this study reveal that the spelling system or Pasang Aksara Bali is important as a supporter of the existence of the Balinese language in the cultural realm. Pasang Aksara Bali should be understood not only as a spelling system but also contains socio-cultural meanings and values as a means of education for the community in order to foster ethics and character. Thus, the ethical and critical context in Pasang Aksara Bali is very important to be transmitted, especially to students and the younger generation in order to strengthen a cultured personality.
