Abstract

The development of digital technology and globalization has influenced the language use of Indonesian youth, particularly in informal communication on social media, which is marked by the widespread use of mixed language between Indonesian and English in slang. This phenomenon not only indicates linguistic change, but also reflects the social identity and communication style of teenagers. This study aims to analyze the forms, formation processes, and social functions of Indonesian–English mixed words in slang. This research is based on the theory of code-mixing according to Einar Haugen (1953), particularly intra-word code-mixing. The method used is the distributional method (agih method) and morphological analysis, with data sources in the form of posts and comments on social media platforms TikTok, Instagram, and Twitter (X), collected through documentation techniques. Data analysis was conducted using the immediate constituent analysis technique to identify morpheme structures and word formation patterns. The results of the study show two main patterns of mixed word formation, namely Indonesian base words given English suffixes, such as jujurly and ngabers, as well as English base words given Indonesian suffixes, such as bestienya and insecurean. In terms of function, the use of mixed words serves as a means of expression, humor, group solidarity, and a marker of the social identity of the younger generation. This study concludes that Indonesian–English slang is a dynamic and creative linguistic practice, reflecting active bilingualism and the influence of digital media on the language development of today’s youth.
