Abstract

This study aims to analyze and compare the use of grammatical and lexical cohesion devices in the Japanese and Indonesian versions of the folklore "Hanasaka Ji-san." Cohesion is a crucial element in forming a coherent discourse; however, the typological differences between Japanese (as a high-context language) and Indonesian often create shifts in cohesive mechanisms within translated texts. The research data were sourced from the narrative text "Hanasaka Ji-san" which have Japanese version and its translation into Indonesian. The method employed is descriptive qualitative with a contrastive analysis approach based on Halliday and Hasan’s theory of cohesion. The results indicate that in terms of grammatical cohesion, Indonesian tends to use explicit pronominal references, whereas Japanese is dominated by the use of ellipsis (subject omission) that relies on context. In terms of lexical cohesion, both languages consistently utilize repetition to strengthen characterization and maintain the continuity of the folklore. Significant differences were also found in the use of conjunctions, where Indonesian uses external sentence-connective conjunctions, while Japanese utilizes verb conjugations to link clauses. These findings contribute to contrastive linguistic studies and provide guidance for translators in managing cohesive shifts to maintain textual integrity across languages.
