Abstract

This article examines the reproduction and adaptation of popular music within the cultural activism of the KAK5 music collective through YouTube as an alternative strategy for revitalizing the Amahai mother tongue and oral literature in Negeri Amahai, Central Maluku, in response to changing media ecologies and the cultural dynamics of younger generations. The study focuses on analyzing strategies for integrating the endangered Amahai language into song lyrics, oral expressions, and cultural narratives, while also exploring how YouTube functions as a space of digital cultural activism to expand reach and enhance the visibility of mother tongue usage. Employing a qualitative approach, the research combines digital ethnography to observe the production, distribution, and reception of musical content with critical discourse analysis to examine representations of language, cultural identity, and revitalization ideologies embodied in KAK5’s musical works. In addition, the study incorporates digital autoethnography, as the researcher is an active member of KAK5 and directly involved in the creative and content management processes, enabling participatory and reflexive insights into the dynamics of cultural activism. The findings demonstrate that popular music in digital spaces serves as a strategic medium for transforming oral literature into contemporary forms more accessible to younger audiences, strengthening linguistic pride and cultural identity while encouraging active participation in language preservation. The study proposes a participatory and context-sensitive model of language and oral literature revitalization that is responsive to the evolving landscape of digital media.
